If you’re searching for microneedling in Rhode Island or Massachusetts, the most important question is not simply, “Who offers it?” It is, “Who has the expertise to tailor it precisely to my skin?”

You are not just looking for someone who performs microneedling—you are looking for a provider who knows when to adjust, when to be conservative + when your skin needs something entirely different. The right provider can mean the difference between a meaningful investment in your skin health + an expensive lesson.

Microneedling may be easy to find. A provider who performs it exceptionally well—and makes every decision with your skin in mind? That’s the rare find.

Microneedling at a Glance

  • Commonly treated concerns: Acne scars, fine lines, enlarged-looking pores + uneven texture
  • Typical treatment plan: Three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart
  • For more significant acne scarring: Four to six treatments may be recommended
  • Typical visible downtime: Approximately 24–72 hours of redness, although sensitivity or flaking may last longer
  • Technology used at REVIVE: SkinPen® microneedling
  • Location: East Greenwich, Rhode Island, welcoming patients from Rhode Island + nearby Massachusetts

At REVIVE Aesthetics + Wellness, microneedling is never a preset treatment. Before the SkinPen ever touches your skin, your provider evaluates your skin health, concerns, medical history, sensitivity, previous treatments + desired outcome.

From there, we personalize:

  • The areas treated
  • The treatment depth used in each area
  • The intensity and number of passes performed
  • Which concerns receive additional focus
  • How your skin is prepared before treatment
  • Your post-treatment skincare + recovery plan
  • The number and spacing of treatments recommended

Your cheeks, forehead and more delicate areas do not necessarily need the same approach—and they are under no obligation to agree. We adjust the treatment as we move across the face rather than using one setting everywhere and hoping for the best.

For someone treating mild texture or early fine lines, that may mean a more conservative treatment plan. For someone with deeper acne scarring, it may involve greater focus in specific areas and a longer series of appropriately spaced treatments. For skin that is irritated, sunburned or not ready to heal well, the right plan may be to wait.

And if microneedling is not the treatment best suited to your concern? We will tell you.

The goal is not to do more. It is to do exactly what your skin needs—and nothing it doesn’t.

That level of personalization matters because microneedling works by creating controlled microchannels that activate the skin’s natural repair process. The treatment needs to be effective enough to encourage renewal while still respecting your skin barrier, pigment response + ability to heal.

Tiny needles may not sound like the most obvious path to beautiful skin. We understand. But when they are used precisely and intentionally, they can encourage your skin to do something it already knows how to do remarkably well: repair, rebuild + renew itself.

The result is not a different face. It is healthier skin that presents smoother, firmer, more refined + naturally radiant over time.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, uses fine, sterile needles to create precise microchannels in the skin.

“Controlled micro-injuries” is the clinical term. It sounds slightly dramatic, but the concept is simple: these tiny channels initiate the skin’s natural healing response, supporting the production of collagen + elastin.

Think of it as sending your skin a very specific memo: a little more repair here, please.

At REVIVE, we perform traditional SkinPen microneedling. SkinPen is an FDA-cleared microneedling device used to improve the appearance of facial acne scars and wrinkles.

Traditional microneedling is different from radiofrequency—or RF—microneedling, which combines needles with heat energy and comes with a different set of considerations. Similar names, different treatments. Skincare does enjoy keeping us on our toes.

What Can Microneedling Improve?

Microneedling may be recommended for patients concerned about:

  • Fine lines + early signs of aging
  • Acne scars and post-acne texture
  • The appearance of enlarged pores
  • Uneven or rough skin texture
  • Certain forms of hyperpigmentation or discoloration
  • Visible sun damage
  • Mild loss of firmness
  • Dull or tired-looking skin
  • Overall skin quality + rejuvenation

A small technical note: pores do not actually open and close like tiny doors. Microneedling may, however, help refine the surrounding skin so pores appear less noticeable.

Not every concern should be treated in the same way. Certain types of pigmentation, active acne and more advanced skin laxity may respond better to a different—or combined—treatment plan.

Your consultation allows us to evaluate what your skin actually needs before recommending a procedure. Sometimes the answer is microneedling. Sometimes another treatment makes more sense. Good skincare is personal like that.

What Happens During a Microneedling Treatment?

Before treatment, your provider will assess your skin, review your medical history and discuss what you would like to improve. This helps us determine whether microneedling is appropriate and how your treatment should be performed.

Your skin is then cleansed, and a topical numbing medication is typically applied for comfort. During the treatment, the SkinPen device creates controlled microchannels using a sterile, single-use needle cartridge.

You may feel pressure, vibration or mild sensitivity in certain areas, but most patients tolerate the treatment well. It is not quite a facial massage, but numbing helps considerably.

As your provider moves across the treatment area, they will precisely adjust their technique according to your skin’s needs + response.

Afterward, we will review your personalized aftercare instructions and explain exactly what to expect as your skin heals. You will not be sent home to consult the internet and hope for the best.

How Often Should You Get Microneedling?

Many REVIVE treatment plans begin with a series of three microneedling sessions spaced approximately four to six weeks apart.

Patients treating acne scars or more significant texture irregularities may benefit from four to six treatments—or occasionally more—depending on the type and severity of the scarring.

Collagen works on its own calendar—and, regrettably, even a wedding invitation will not persuade it to rush. If your skin goals are tied to a wedding or another milestone, beginning early gives your treatment plan time to do its best work.

Spacing treatments appropriately gives your skin time to heal, rebuild + respond before the next session. Your recommended plan will depend on:

  • Your primary skin concerns
  • The severity of textural changes or scarring
  • Your skin’s overall health
  • How your skin responds to treatment
  • Your desired outcome + timeline

We will never recommend more treatment simply to fit a predetermined package. The plan should fit your skin—not the other way around.

How Much Downtime Should You Expect?

Microneedling generally involves minimal social downtime, but your skin will not look entirely untouched immediately afterward.

Most patients experience redness, warmth and mild swelling that can resemble a sunburn—or an ambitious workout without the actual workout. The skin may also feel tight, dry or sensitive.

Visible redness commonly improves within 24 to 72 hours, although sensitivity, flaking or rough texture may continue for several days.

Recovery varies based on treatment intensity and your individual skin response. If you have an important event approaching, give your skin enough time to fully settle. Microneedling the day before professional photos is the kind of spontaneity we cannot endorse.

How Should You Prepare for Microneedling?

Your provider will give you instructions based on your skincare routine and medical history. In general, you may be advised to:

  • Come in makeup + lotion free
  • Avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure before treatment
  • Arrive without a sunburn, significant irritation or compromised skin barrier
  • Pause retinoids, exfoliating acids and certain acne products as directed
  • Avoid waxing, aggressive exfoliation or other potentially irritating treatments close to your appointment
  • Tell your provider about active breakouts, infections, cold sores or open areas
  • Disclose recent procedures, medications, bleeding conditions or blood-thinning medications

In short: calm, clean skin is the ideal starting point. A sunburn is not a pre-treatment glow.

Never discontinue a prescribed medication without guidance from the clinician who prescribed it.

What Should You Do After Microneedling?

Freshly treated skin deserves a little restraint. This is not the moment to audition every active ingredient in your skincare cabinet.

After your appointment, you will generally be advised to:

  • Use only gentle, provider-approved skincare—your skin has enough on its agenda. One of our post-treatment favorites is the Epicutis Starter Kit, a streamlined routine selected to support the skin barrier while it recovers
  • Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs and other irritating ingredients until cleared
  • Wait at least 24 hours—or the timeframe provided by your clinician—before applying makeup
  • Begin applying an approved sunscreen after the first 24 hours and protect your skin from direct sun exposure
  • Avoid excessive heat, strenuous exercise, sweating, saunas and swimming during the initial healing period
  • Avoid picking, peeling or exfoliating flaking skin, no matter how tempting it may be

Following your aftercare instructions helps protect the healing skin and lowers the risk of irritation, infection or unwanted pigment changes.

Gentle and slightly boring wins this round.

When Will You See Microneedling Results?

Some patients notice an early glow and smoother-looking texture within the first few weeks. The deeper benefits develop gradually as new collagen forms and the skin continues remodeling.

Collagen is a slow burn, not an overnight plot twist.

Results may become more noticeable over several weeks to months, particularly after completing a recommended treatment series. Maintenance treatments may be suggested based on your skin, age, goals + daily habits.

The progression is intentionally subtle: smoother, healthier + more rested-looking skin that still looks entirely like yours.

Is Microneedling Safe for Every Skin Tone?

Professional microneedling can be performed across a wide range of skin tones. However, thoughtful patient selection, appropriate treatment settings and careful aftercare are especially important for anyone prone to hyperpigmentation or prolonged discoloration.

This is another reason personalization matters. A treatment can be popular without being universally appropriate. Your skin does not care what is trending—and frankly, we appreciate its independence.

Who May Need to Postpone Microneedling?

Microneedling is not appropriate for everyone. Treatment may need to be postponed or avoided if you have:

  • A sunburn or recent significant sun exposure
  • An active skin infection or cold sore outbreak
  • Painful, inflamed or cystic acne in the treatment area
  • Open wounds or severely irritated skin
  • A history of poor wound healing or certain types of raised scars
  • A weakened immune system
  • Certain bleeding conditions or medications that affect clotting
  • Recent isotretinoin use

Your provider should review your medical history before determining whether treatment is appropriate. Safety is never the place for improvisation—or selective memory on a medical form.

What Should You Ask Before Booking Microneedling?

The device is only part of the treatment. The assessment, technique, sanitation standards + aftercare plan matter just as much.

Before booking, consider asking:

  • Which microneedling device will be used?
  • Who will perform the treatment, and what training do they have?
  • Is a new, sterile needle cartridge used for every treatment?
  • How will the treatment be customized for my skin?
  • Will the provider use the same depth everywhere or adjust the treatment by area?
  • How many sessions are realistically recommended?
  • What should I expect during recovery?
  • Who should I contact if I have a concern afterward?

A reputable provider will welcome informed questions and offer clear, unhurried answers. We rather like a patient who has done her homework.
